L6 – Use of Force V 2.0

The use of force in the military involves a legal framework that dictates when and how force can be used, balancing national security needs with ethical considerations and human rights. In the United States, Congress grants authority for the use of military force, and military personnel can use reasonable force, including deadly force, when necessary to defend themselves, military equipment, or to prevent imminent threats. Below are some questions and answers to assist you with your CBT.

Example Questions and Answers

Q: You are deployed in a forward operating environment. Your base was recently placed under force Protection Condition Delta, based upon new intelligence reports. You were informed the base was under an imminent attack because intelligence reports indicated an explosive-laden gasoline truck would attempt to crash through the perimeter, causing massive damage to personnel and resources. While on duty, you notice a gasoline truck fitting the description crash into the installation perimeter. Select the best action:

A: You should immediately notify your control center, take cover, and challenge the occupants of the truck. Relay to your control center a description of the occupants and the actual location of the vehicle. Notify all personnel in the vicinity to evacuate the area because conditions may be hostile.

Q: You are posted as an Entry controller at a field hospital in a forward deployed location during increased security measures. Your duties are to control access to the medical clinic, through verifying proper identification. While performing your duties, you hear emergency sirens and see an ambulance quickly approaching your location. Once it arrives, two occupats in the front of the ambulance appear to be non-US citizens, fail to show proper ID, and begin shouting in broken English, “Someone is injured on the flight line”. You have not been notified of any incidents/accidets on the flight line. Select the best option:

A: You should immediately notify your control center, take cover, and challenge the occupants of the vehicle. At this point, you do not know if the individuals are authorized access, without verification. Attempt to remove the personnel from the vehicle using the reasonable amount of force necessary.

Q: You and another Airman are armed with rifles and standing in a 35-foot observation tower watching over the perimeter of a host nation base. The base is surrounded by dirt berms and concertina wire. A group of slightly agitated civilians are approaching your position rapidly. The demonstrators are protesting US military operations in their country. The members are waving anti-American signs, pulling on the fence, and shouting obscenities. Select the best action:

A: You should immediately notify the control center, remain in a position of cover, and challenge the civilians. Request assistance from your control center and keep the members at a position of disadvantage until security personnel arrive at your location.

Q: You are assigned to a bare base location as an Entry Controller for a classified communications site. Suddenly, a dump truck circles the parking lot twice, gathers speed, crashes through the concertina wire barrier, and barrels toward the main building of the compound. Within seconds it will be at the main building. Select the best action for the scenario:

A: You should take cover and engage the oncoming truck with weapons fire, to stop the threat. The acceleration of the truck towards you or your position is a hostile act. The vehicle can be considered a weapon, so take all necessary means to stop the vehicle.

Q: You are on a joint mission with the Army near a town whose population is short of shelter and food, due to operations against enemy forces. a United Nations humanitarian relief organization has established a food distribution point 200 meters from your position. You see a civilian truck approach the food distribution point. Two civilians exit the vehicle and aim assault rifles at your location and the relief workers. Select the best action:

A: You should take cover and shoot the armed adversaries, or use any other force appropriate to the situation.

Q: A sniper in civilian clothing opens fire on your position from a building adjacent to your Entry Control Point (ECP), approximately 75-100 meters from your position. You observe the weapons fire coming from an apartment building, which houses local nationals. Select the best option:

A: You should take cover, aim, and return weapons fire only at the target causing the hostile act.

Q: You are part of a multinational coalition convoy and a group fo children run out onto the road in front of you, cheering and waving. While you are stopped, another vehicle approaches from behind the group of children, stops and opens fire on the convoy. Select the best action:

A: You should immediately return fire upon the adversaries and try to avoid injuring the children in the crossfire.
